The Twin River Mine, formerly known as the Bobbie #4 is a documented mineral property in the Twin River mining district of Nye, County Nevada.
Featuring multiple underground entrances via adit tunnel and open stope shaft, heavily mineralized ore reserves, and a secluded hilltop location.
Located in the early 1860s, the Twin River district was located by a reclusive prospector named Bourland, who kept the discoveries to himself. Though as with all mineral discoveries, the secret was soon leaked. In 1864 the Twin River Mining Co. was formed, and the Murphy Mine was developed.
In 1885, a leaser of the Murphy Mine made a rich discovery. This gave new life to the mine. The Chicago Mining and Reduction Company (which may have been a new name given to the old company) began revamping the mine in 1886. On March 14, 1886, the Eureka Daily Sentinel reported "The Chicago Mining and Reduction Company, Ophir Canyon, are pushing the work of development steadily in their mine, which continues to improve with every stroke of the pick. The mill is running and doing good work." Ore was assaying between $800 and $3,000 a ton. By April of 1886, plans were made to bring the 10-stamp Prussian Mill from Jefferson (see Jefferson page) to Ophir to increase the mill capacity to 30 stamps. By May, the Murphy was employing every man available.
The Twin River Mine was located in 1951, southeast of the Murphy mine in Ophir Canyon, and is noted for producing: Silver, Tungsten, and Molybdenum. The Mine was owned by the Wilson family from 1951 to 2011 ( Robert Wilson, standing in front of a timbered incline shaft, pictured below).
Small gold veins occur at various localities throughout this area. Near the mouth of Ophir Canyon, high-grade gold ore occurs in a narrow quartz vein, and near-surface ores reportedly yield appreciable quantities of gold.
The Mine was owned by the Wilson family, under the name of the Reeves Company from 1951 to 2011 ( Robert Wilson in 1975, standing in front of a timbered incline shaft, pictured below). Records show $60,000 made during production between 1975 and 1979.
- Primary workings consist of a large open stope inclined shaft as well as two adit style prospects.
The shaft is developed into a mineralized outcropping with a 15-degree decline strike into the lower underground stock workings.
Incline shafts feature partial wooden cribbing and support on the entrance portals, with a defined mineralized vein structure on the mine face.
Overburden removal and shaft access maintenance will be required for further underground exploration.
- Small Gold veins occur at various localities throughout the Ophir Canyon area.
Two types of metallic mineral occurrences have been recognized in the district: (1)Polymetallic veins and disseminated minerals including gold, Silver, Zinc, and Copper (2) tungsten-bearing skarns.
Barite, limestone, dolostone, and dimension stone are locally present as tertiary commodities.
- Mineral Estimates:
- Silver Ag: 4.7 to 14.00 OPT (ounces per ton)
- Tungsten: Unknown
- Gold Au : 0.18 - to 0.38 Opt ( ounces per ton)
- Molybdenum: Unknown
Water is available and accessible below the main road in Ophir Creek.
Access to the mine is via an excellent grade dirt road to the lower parking and staging area below the hillside, the older mine cutback road is suitable for any 4x4 vehicle.
Secondary parking and staging areas are available near the mine portals.
A beautifully secluded location, suitable for the beginning enthusiast, up to an established mining company.
