The Stonewall Placer is a documented mineral property located in the Lincoln mining district of Lewis and Clark County, Montana.
Featuring one of the richest placer deposits in northern Montana, with workings from a ground-sluice operation on the upper bench gravel deposits, annual water flow, and excellent access.
Previously known as the Stonewall No. 6 and 7 placers, the mine boasts documented assay reports of 11.27 Grams of Gold per cubic yard.
Originally located in 1933 by H.E. Woods, the Stonewall Placer remained active on a small scale through the 1950s. During the 1980s, mining interest renewed in the district with operations such as the nearby "Giant Mine" underground shaft located northeast of the Stonewall tributary, as well as a few independent placer operations below.
The wooden drop riffle sluicing method of the era was at the time effective, though a relative Gold capture rate of 55%-78% was standard and dependent upon operator skills.
As with most past productions, excessive flower Gold was lost in the screened tailings, as well as through the wash plants.
- The primary placer deposit consists of auriferous alluvial gravel beds surrounding Stonewall Creek. The deposits are most likely sourced from the mineralized quartz veins such as the "Giant Vein" near the peak of Stonewall Mtn.
- Estimated Gold values are 1.5 grams-to-11.27 grams Au per yard.
- Gold concentrations are favorable in the orange clay layer below the gravels, as well as on bedrock.
This location provides a perfect opportunity to utilize modern dredging technology for enhanced Gold recovery as well as standard sluicing and high banking.
Dual staging areas are located off a well-maintained forest service road.
The secluded area topography masks the camp and its workings from road views.
- Access to the area is available to most 2WD and any 4x4 vehicle.
- Parking and staging area is suitable for multiple vehicles and campers
