The Magdelena is a documented mineral property in the historic Basin mining district of Jefferson county, Montana.
Featuring drift mine workings with heavy-rail sets , headframe bracing from the 1980's era, over 600' of gold bearing creek and a secluded location.
Gold had been discovered in the Basin district before 1870, though mining was sporadic and mostly undocumented.
Peak activity in the district was during 1908- through 1941. From the end of World War II through 1954 activity was on a small scale, worked by families or smaller companies.
Production history shows the Magdalena mine worked during the late 1980's, though the deposit was likely discovered much earlier.
Primary workings consist of an inclined drift mine shaft, driven at a 65 degree angle to meet the gold bearing gravel deposits adjacent to Basin Creek.
The shaft was constructed with timbered bracing, steel pipe for water removal and heavy gauge steel rail for ore cars. Remnants of a timbered headframe and cable rest above the currently flooded shaft.
During production, lengthy amounts of steel pipe had been connected to a nearby pump house for water removal.
Based upon the mine spill, the shaft was successfully driven between 120'-over 200' in depth.
Secondary workings consist of numerous prospect shafts and cuts along the Creekside, with gold values present in the gravel beds, upper bench workings and bedrock deposits.
Water flows annually with moderate flow, suitable for high-banker or dredging operations, as well as casual gold panning.
A large open staging area is present near the old Mine Forman's cabin, with only a lone stone built fire place left standing.
The incredibly secluded location is accessible during the warmer months by any higher clearance vehicle type, with snowmobile access between December and May.
An excellent location for the begging enthusiast up to an established mining company.
